What this site is, what it is not, and the single most important thing to know about our method: everything here is research based and nothing is hands on tested.
Last updated: September 3, 2026
The information on yardflock.com is published for general informational purposes only. It is not professional advice, and it should not be treated as a substitute for the judgement of a qualified veterinarian, builder, electrician or local authority.
1. Research based, not hands on tested
This is the most important paragraph on this page, so we will not bury it. Yard Flock does not test products in a coop of our own. We do not run laboratory trials, we do not conduct field durability testing, and we do not claim personal long term use of the products we write about.
Every recommendation, score, table and figure on this site is synthesised from three sources: manufacturer specifications and published product documentation, published poultry and agricultural extension literature, and verified owner reviews read at scale for patterns. Where those sources disagree, we say so. Where a figure is not published, we say that too rather than estimating it.
Why we say this plainly
A great deal of poultry content implies hands on experience it does not have. We would rather tell you exactly what our method is and let you weigh the work accordingly. If a claim on this site ever reads as though we tested something ourselves, it is an error. Email hello@yardflock.com and we will correct it.
2. No veterinary advice
Nothing on this site diagnoses, treats or prevents disease in poultry. Content about mites, respiratory illness, egg binding, moulting, nutrition or medication is general background reading only. If a bird is unwell, injured or behaving abnormally, contact a licensed veterinarian or your local agricultural extension service. Withdrawal periods for any medication, and the rules on treating birds whose eggs or meat enter the food chain, are governed by law in your jurisdiction and must be checked locally.
3. No construction, electrical or code advice
Coop and run content describes general principles and published guidance. It is not a set of engineered plans and it does not account for your soil, your snow load, your wind exposure or your local building code. Electric fencing carries specific safety and signage requirements that vary by jurisdiction. Where work is regulated, use a qualified professional and obtain the permits your municipality requires.
4. Local ordinances are your responsibility
Backyard poultry is regulated at the city, county and sometimes neighbourhood level. Flock size caps, rooster prohibitions, coop setback distances from property lines and dwellings, permit requirements, and homeowner association rules all vary enormously and change over time. We cannot tell you what applies to your address. Check with your municipality before you build or buy birds.
5. Animal welfare
Where a product carries a welfare risk, we flag it in the guide itself. Chicken wire is not predator proof. Aromatic cedar shavings are widely advised against in coops and brooders. Unventilated winter coops trap moisture and cause frostbite. These warnings are published because we believe they matter more than a sale, but they are general in nature and cannot cover every situation. Your birds are your responsibility.
6. Accuracy and currency
Specifications change without notice. Manufacturers revise products while keeping the same model name. Prices, availability and package contents change constantly. We review our guides periodically, but we cannot guarantee that every figure reflects the current version of a product at the moment you read it. Always confirm critical specifications with the manufacturer or retailer before purchasing or building.
7. Scores are editorial judgements
Our roost rail scores are editorial judgements produced by the research method described above. They are not measurements. Two products with the same score are not identical, and a score is only meaningful within its own category, where the criteria are held constant.
8. Affiliate disclosure
This site contains affiliate links. If you click one and make a purchase we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. See our Affiliate Disclosure for the full statement.
9. External links
We link to third party sites for reference and for purchase. We do not control their content and we are not responsible for it. A link is not an endorsement of everything on the destination site.
10. Limitation of liability
Use of the information on this site is at your own risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Yard Flock accepts no liability for any loss or damage, including loss of livestock, property damage or personal injury, arising from reliance on content published here.
11. Corrections
If you spot an error, email hello@yardflock.com with the page and the correct figure. Corrections are the highest priority messages we receive, and when we change something material we say what changed.

Research method
Everything on Yard Flock is built from manufacturer specifications, published poultry and extension literature, and verified owner reviews. We do not test products in a coop of our own, and we say so on every page.
